Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta has developed a reputation for using tactical mind games to gain an edge over opposition managers.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed the Arsenal boss often involves injured players in pre-match routines to create uncertainty.

In his book, ‘Believe’ (via The Athletic), Zinchenko explained: “[Arteta] likes to play games with the opposition.

“I’ve seen him tell injured players to come on the team bus and walk into the dressing room with their wash bag to put the other manager off the scent.”

Arteta’s tactics have helped transform Arsenal into Premier League title contenders. His approach is reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson, adding a psychological layer to Arsenal’s preparation.

Even amid injury challenges this season, Arteta has used these strategies to his advantage.

A prime example came in Arsenal’s recent clash with Liverpool, where Bukayo Saka started despite being deemed ‘very uncertain’ to play in the build-up.

The winger not only featured but scored the opening goal, causing significant problems for Liverpool’s defence.

Arteta subsequently shed light on his methods, admitting he prefers to keep opponents guessing.

“I don’t want to make it easy for anyone,” he said. “The opponent has to work and think and prepare and make sure they do their homework like I have to.

“I wish I knew their starting XI, who is on the bench, but I don’t. It is our job to guess and do the work we have to do.” These calculated moves not only put pressure on opposition managers but also keep Arsenal’s squad on high alert.

The Spaniard’s meticulous preparation has clearly been instrumental in Arsenal’s resurgence, demonstrating his ability to blend strategic foresight with psychological warfare to maintain an advantage in one of football’s most competitive leagues.
