Arsenal eye World Cup star who stunned England

Arsenal have reportedly joined the growing list of clubs monitoring Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup, although securing the Norwegian international’s signature this summer could prove far from straightforward.

According to ESPN, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all keeping a close eye on Schjelderup’s situation after the 22-year-old impressed during the FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, recent reports have also credited Arsenal with an interest in the talented wide forward.

Arsenal face competition for highly-rated Benfica winger

According to the report Schjelderup is considering a new challenge this summer despite still having two years remaining on his contract with Benfica.

The report adds that any club hoping to prise him away from the Portuguese giants would likely need to submit an offer worth at least €40 million, underlining the value Benfica place on one of their brightest attacking talents.

Schjelderup enhanced his growing reputation with a series of eye-catching displays for Norway at this summer’s World Cup, where he made six appearances. His performances have reportedly attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs, with Arsenal now among those linked alongside Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Arsenal supporters will already have had a chance to see exactly what Schjelderup can offer on the biggest stage. The Benfica winger caught the eye during Norway’s impressive World Cup campaign and scored a superb opening goal against England in the quarter-finals, cutting inside from the left before firing beyond Jordan Pickford. Although Jude Bellingham’s brace eventually inspired the Three Lions to a 2-1 extra-time victory, Schjelderup’s display against an England side featuring several Arsenal players served as another reminder of why some of Europe’s biggest clubs are now monitoring his progress so closely.

Benfica stance could complicate any move

While Arsenal’s reported interest is intriguing, completing a deal may not be straightforward.

TransferFeed reports that Benfica are currently reluctant to sell Schjelderup during this transfer window, with that stance having prompted some interested clubs to turn their attention towards fellow Norway international Antonio Nusa instead, Nusa being another reported Arsenal target.

The same report notes that Schjelderup is under contract until 2028 and currently carries a market valuation of around €40 million, although Benfica’s reported asking price has been placed significantly higher in recent weeks. Reports have suggested the Portuguese club could demand anywhere between €50 million and €80 million, while his contract is also believed to include a €100 million release clause.

For now, Arsenal’s reported interest appears to be at the exploratory stage, and with several Premier League rivals also tracking the Norwegian, any move is likely to depend on whether Benfica soften their current stance before the transfer window closes.
