Arsenal fans have had plenty to say after facing Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.
Eddie Howe’s side with an excellent performance and victory.
The 2-0 on the night making it a 4-0 thrashing on aggregate.
Three wins over Arsenal (so far…) this season.
Newcastle United on their way to Wembley, whilst Arsenal fans wondering what went wrong…
Some intriguing and very differing views from Arsenal fans, commenting via their Arsenal Mania message board:
‘Too many nice boys in this team, a lot of people call newcastle thugs but I would love it if we had a Bruno G and Joelinton elbowing and chokeslaming opposition players to make us more competitive and give us an edge on the pitch.
Instead we have Odegaard (our captain lol) fretting and Havertz crying if the atmosphere is too hostile.’
‘Fa cup is a proper trophy, league cup is a tinpot trophy.’
‘I reckon a club like ours should be aiming to win trophies but maybe that’s just me.’
‘Arteta needs to work out how to beat Howe.
I know we smashed them at home last season but this can’t continue.’
‘Think newcastle pose more troubles for us than any other side in the PL now.
They match us well.
Pacey forwards who can expose our high defensive line and are effective at pressing, grit and physicality in the midfield and monster CBs who are difficult to expose with our crossing and set pieces.’
‘What a pathetic performance that was. I can accept us losing and being knocked out of competitions but being overawed by the occasion in a Coca Cola cup semi final is just disgraceful for a club of our stature.
Fair play to Newcastle who deserved the win and especially Isak who looks the real deal but our team deserves to be hammered for this result.’
‘The difference between the first 20 minutes against man city and first 20 minutes against Newcastle was like watching two different teams.’
‘Don’t think we were overawed.
We just struggle against this Newcastle team, not even scoring a goal in 4 of the last 5 meetings. If we thrashed them regularly in the league and played like this in the semi then we could consider being overawed. I’m afraid we play rubbish against them no matter the occasion.’
‘I hope Newcastle don’t qualify for Champions League if we’re going to have any chance at all of signing Isak ’cause what a player he is at the moment..!’
‘My confidence when we play Newcastle is always nil. Said it before the first leg as well, it’s like they’ve been genetically engineered to **** us.’
‘Despite investing in wrestlers we can’t match Newcastle’s physicality and directness. There is no point in fighting fire with fire because all it leads to is a bigger fire (shoutout to Hannah Montana). We should’ve leaned into our technical supremacy. Oh wait, we have no technicians, silly me.’
‘I think the main thing we lack is ego, as simple as it sounds…no one in our team can carry themselves, the way the likes of Isak and Guimares carry themselves…they feel like main men in a team, we had no one on the pitch that felt like that yesterday.’
‘You can’t say this team lacks ego when we smashed City by five goals. We lack technical security. We beat City because we outran their midfield and blitzed them on the counter. Newcastle was a test for our brain, and we clearly lack that. Our brawn is nothing compared to the Geordies.’
‘5 years without anything at Arsenal, is about 50 years for a Newcastle…we are starving too bro.
Right now this broccoli cup is looking tasty when we haven’t eaten in days!’
‘I don’t see this cup as silverware and I don’t think this would make any difference among fans in the world or the players.
If we want to retain players and attract quality we need to win the league or UCL.
So I would only celebrate those two trophies with joy.
This cup means nothing to me and doesn’t even triggers my feelings. I don’t feel rage or joy about it.’
‘It might not be highly respected but you don’t see top teams cherry picking what trophies they want to win and throw away, they go into win every competition their in especially when they’re in the latter stages.
Pep Guardiola has won this trophy how many times as has Klopp in recent years. Back in our glory days, we were winning the cup winners cup, FA Cup etc and celebrating it like we won a major honour. Winners go for whatever they can whereas losers make excuses when they’re out about it being a worthless trophy.’
‘I can’t even hate on Newcastle.
Fair play.
We deserved to lose as we didn’t take our chances over the two games.’
‘Desperate stuff. The tie was lost in the first game but the decision to play the same starting XI was risky and failed.
We ended up losing badly with our first team which doesn’t do much for morale.
Newcastle defended well but their attack, and this includes Isak, was no great shakes. We beat ourselves on the night.’
‘Worried we’ve been found out tonight.
Press our CBs and it’s game over.’
‘The pitch at St James Park plays a huge role in that. Ball gets stuck under your feet, you’re constantly slipping, having to second-guess your every step.
Because of this very reason we haven’t played well at St James Park since the Wenger days. Very rarely we go there and score more than the odd goal.’
‘It was due to the fact that we were behind 2 goals in the first tie. We wanted to score the first goal early, which made Newcastles task easier.’
‘We were predictably awful once against at this bogey ground. Said it pre match our record there is awful so it’s all expected. Tie was lost in the first game anyway.’
‘We should have brought on our strik…oh…wait…’
‘I expected us to loose this.
Now lets Win CL.
Nothing will put fire more under Isak than him Winning carabo cup and us CL.’
‘The cup doesn’t mean much. But losing to Newcastle like that does.
There just seems to be a separation of class today.
Maybe our players just weren’t at their best. But it’s been a consistent problem that our “goal scorers” can’t find the goal. Frustrating to watch. The football isn’t pretty. Isak made Saliba look foolish more than once today.’
‘Bummy cup, so not that bothered. But if that’s how we play under pressure in a cup competition then it’s hard not to be pessimistic going into the CL.’
‘Not into this “FA and League Cup are irrelevant” nonsense. We’ve only won 4 FA Cups in 20 odd years FFS.
Winning trophies becomes a habit for successful clubs in my opinion.
Couple more of them in the last 2-3 years and I bet we’d be more confident in getting over the line in the league.’
‘The FA cup is relevant. Tbe other one is just that, tbe other one.’
‘Birmingham final still haunts me now. Winning trophies is what it’s all about.’
‘You have £140m to buy 3 players.
Arsenal buy Havertz, Merino, Fabio Vieira
Newcastle buy Isak, Bruno, Gordon’
‘Bruno G and Isak, useless Edu let them go away, they would’ve turned us around.’
‘I remember people around here wanting Bruno before he came to England. I remember people wanting isak when he was in Spain. Difference is we didn’t take the risk and went for the “safer” option.’
