Arsenal have announced that they have hired former Premier League winner Gabriel Heinze to join Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff for next season.
Heinze brings a wealth of experience with him to the Emirates, as he enjoyed a successful career as a player. During his career, he won league titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Marseille. He also played for five other sides, including the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Roma.
On the international stage, he was capped 72 times for Argentina, featuring in multiple World Cups and Copa Americas. The former defender has huge experience of the top level of football that Arsenal will hope to benefit from.
Just a year after he retired from football in 2014, Heinze began his coaching career in Argentina.
His managerial career began with him taking charge of Godoy Cruz in Argentina’s top flight. However, he lasted in the role for just 10 matches. A year later, he was named as manager of Argentinos Juniors. He took charge of 46 games, maintaining a 54.35% win rate, before he chose to resign.
Heinze’s next job was at Velez Sarsfield in December 2017. He again had some successes, achieving back-to-back Copa Sudamericana qualifications. However, at the end of the 2019/20 season, he chose not to renew his contract.
Heinze then headed for the United States and the MLS, as he was appointed manager at Atlanta United. After struggles during his seven months in charge there, he was dismissed in July 2021.
His final managerial job to date came with a return to Argentina. In October 2022, he took charge of Newell’s Old Boys, the club where he started and ended his playing career. Heinze spent a year in the role before deciding to leave and he has not returned to management since.
The former Argentine international now arrives at Arsenal, as the club is hoping to secure its first Premier League title in over 20 years. Arteta will hope that Heinz’s first-hand experience will boost his side, as they look to improve upon three consecutive second place finishes.
The Gunners have already been active in the transfer window. They have signed Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi, as they continue to work on deals for Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze.
