Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has been ruled out of the North London Derby, while Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt to face Spurs in the Premier League.
Gabriel sustained a thigh issue during Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win over Senegal on Saturday. The centre-back limped out of the contest in the second half and did not travel to Lille to take part in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Tunisia.
The centre-back is set to miss weeks of action in a huge blow to the Gunners, who could be missing up to eight players for the visit of Tottenham on Sunday.
“Gabriel has unfortunately picked up an injury with Brazil and he’s going to be out for weeks,” Mikel Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference.
“We need to have another scan, I think on Wednesday, then we will have the timeline much more clear than we have at the moment.
“It’s clear it’s a blow because it’s our leader in the back line. To lose him is never a good thing but the positive is that we have very good options and people have to stand up now and do the job.”
Calafiori has not trained since withdrawing from the Italy squad with a hip injury, but he could be fit enough to take part in the derby.
“Riccardo Calafiori wasn’t available [for Italy], he’s been struggling with a few things so we had to bring him back and he hasn’t trained yet,” the Arsenal boss added.
“We have another session tomorrow so we will how he is.
“We put a lot of energy in with all the medical staff to bring the players back as quick as possible.
“Tomorrow we have another training session to see how some of them are feeling. Whether it is a bit too close to bring them in for this game.
“Tomorrow we will have a bit more clarity.”
