Two months to the day after finalising his loan move from Arsenal to Brentford, Reiss Nelson made his first Premier League appearance for the club on Saturday.

Nelson had already made his first start for Brentford earlier in the week, playing in the League Cup against Grimsby Town, and he certainly made a good case for himself with a goal and an assist.

That was followed by a Premier League appearance as a substitute away to Crystal Palace, and the winger did well again.

Though he only got 15 minutes on the pitch, Nelson had a good shot on target, completed a dribble, and he didn’t misplace a single one of his 10 passes. There were certainly signs of what he can offer the team, just as in midweek.

Nelson’s shot against Palace was very similar to the goal he’d scored against Grimsby, picking up the ball on the edge of the area and curling an effort towards the far post. It was well placed, but Dean Henderson got across to keep it out this time.

Brentford were already 2-0 down when Nelson was introduced, and they ultimately couldn’t turn things around against a very good Palace side.

An illness at the end of September is a big part of the reason Nelson hasn’t been involved more already, missing out on the matchday squads to face Fulham, Manchester United, and Manchester City, before returning to the bench as an unused sub for a couple of games.

After a positive start and sub appearance this week, the 25-year-old should start to get further opportunities now.

Brentford host Newcastle United next, in their final game before the November internationals.
