Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign highly rated centre-back Elijah Upson from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 18-year-old rejected a new contract at Spurs to move across north London, with an official announcement expected in the coming days. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, which involves only a training compensation fee.

The switch carries a neat family connection. Upson is the son of former Arsenal and England defender Matthew Upson, who spent six years at Highbury and played at the 2010 World Cup. His son now follows him to the Emirates.

Arsenal saw off strong competition for the teenager. Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton were all monitoring him, while Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco were credited with interest from abroad.

Upson chose Arsenal after visiting the training ground with his family. His decision reflects the pathway on offer.

Having spent 11 years in Tottenham’s academy, Upson opted against extending his stay, with Spurs’ new win-now approach limiting his route to first-team minutes.

He arrives with a growing reputation. Upson featured regularly in the UEFA Youth League and Under-18 Premier League, even stepping up to the Under-21s, and has represented England at the Under-18 level. He also helped Spurs win the Under-17 Premier League Cup in 2024-25.

His athleticism is notable, too. Upson is a former 100m sprint champion, a quality that adds to his promise as a modern defender. He will initially link up with Arsenal’s development sides.

The signing continues a busy academy drive at Arsenal. Daniel McCarron has also arrived from Dungannon Swifts, as the club look to strengthen their youth ranks alongside a hectic senior window.

For Spurs, losing a prized prospect to their closest rivals will sting. Arsenal, meanwhile, have secured one of the most sought-after young defenders available this summer.
