Jenna Nighswonger has become Arsenal’s first signing of the January window, joining from US National Woman’s Soccer League side Gotham FC.
The 24-year-old full-back made 46 appearances and netted four goals since being drafted for Gotham FC back in January 2023.
Her contributions helped Gotham claim the 2023 NWSL Championship, as well as earning her the accolade of NWSL Rookie of the Year.
The swift progression of the USA international caught the eye of Arsenal, and Nighswonger is delighted to have got the move done. “It’s an incredible feeling to be able to call myself an Arsenal player,” she said.
“I’ve always wanted to play in England and joining such an historic football club is a dream come true.”
The Gunners’ new number 22, has also been involved in international success, being part of the squad, which lifted the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2024 and also winning gold in the Paris Olympics last summer.
Head Coach Renée Slegers says that this experience at such a young age will make Nighswonger a strong addition to the side: “Jenna has had a great trajectory in the game and we are delighted to bring her to Arsenal.
“Despite being only 24, she plays with great maturity and presence and knows what it takes to compete on the biggest stages.”
Arsenal appointed Slegers on a permanent basis earlier this month after a successful spell as interim manager.
Slegers has made it clear that her aspirations are to challenge for the title, and even claimed that she believed league leaders Chelsea were able to be caught.
Their 1-0 defeat last time out against Chelsea has hurt these ambitions, as The Gunners currently sit 4th in the WSL, 10 points behind their London rivals.
