Arsenal u19’s Euros journey ends early with defeat | OneFootball

The England u19s were eliminated from the 2025 European Championships on Friday, ending Arsenal goalkeeper Tommy Setford’s participation in the tournament.

England were eliminated from the u19 European Championships on Friday, failing to secure the win they needed to progress to the knockout stages.

Having drawn against Norway and Germany in their first two games of the tournament, England needed to beat the Netherlands – Group B’s leaders – to guarantee a spot in the next round.

England had a small chance of qualifying even in defeat, but it would have required Germany to play out a low-scoring draw with Norway. In the end, Germany scored an injury-time winner to take all three points as 2-1 victors.

England never looked likely to get the win they needed, nor the draw that would have at least given them some hope. The Netherlands raced into a 3-0 first-half lead, and despite the Young Lions scoring a couple of second-half goals, the match ended 4-2.

On an individual note, Arsenal’s Tommy Setford will be pleased to have played every minute of the tournament for England, starting all three group stage matches.

But those appearances ultimately ended with an early exit from the tournament, and Setford will now begin his holidays and start preparing for pre-season with Arsenal.

The England u19s were perhaps ultimately victim to the successes of some of their players from the qualifying rounds.

Both Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri were involved in qualifiers, providing goals and assists in the first three matches. But they were subsequently promoted, and played no part in the final tournament.

The duo would undoubtedly have made a major impact for England in Romania, had they been available for selection.
