Arsenal will make a renewed approach to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The Gunners could have a busy summer transfer window. A backup goalkeeper to David Raya could be one of the top priorities for manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal were determined to recruit Garcia as Aaron Ramsdale’s successor last summer but could not finalise a suitable transfer fee with Espanyol.

The club proposed to pay £16.7m for the shot-stopper, but the La Liga outfit were reluctant to sell him for less than his release clause, which increased from £20.7m to 24.8m for the last 15 days of the transfer window.

It is now reported that Garcia is poised to be sold at the end of the season. Espanyol sporting director Fran Garagarza has admitted that the club will provide a discount for an early transfer deal.

Arsenal ‘will try again’ for the 23-year-old, who has quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Spanish top flight.

Garcia would be a quality acquisition for Arsenal

The Gunners signed Neto on a season-long loan from Bournemouth after missing out on Garcia.

The Brazilian has made just one appearance in the Champions League against Girona, where he made a high-profile error that led to a goal.

It is doubtful that the Gunners will consider a permanent move for the former Barcelona man.

Instead, they are expected to revive their pursuit of Garcia, who had previously agreed personal terms over a transfer at the start of the campaign.

Garcia did not push through an exit before the deadline. He prefers to leave through the ‘front door‘ and could be granted his wish this summer.

The Spaniard would be a quality acquisition for the Gunners. He has been exceptional with his reflexes between the sticks from his time in La Liga 2.

Garcia has made close to four saves per league game this term with a success rate of 71 per cent.

He has registered more than five long balls on average, with 10 ball recoveries. He has also excelled with his ability to clear his lines when required.

The 23-year-old is quickly developing into one of the best shot-stoppers in Spain. He could become Arsenal’s first-choice keeper in the long run.
