Mikel Arteta believes Liverpool were “in the right place” and the “right moment” to win the Premier League title over Arsenal.
The Reds secured top spot last month with a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, giving them an unassailable lead on 82 points after 34 games played, while the Gunners lie 15 points adrift, second in the table.
Arteta claimed that Arsenal would have won the Premier League with their points totals from the previous two seasons, when they finished runners-up to Manchester City with 89 and 84 points respectively.
However, Liverpool can still potentially finish the campaign with 91 points if they win their final three matches.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League semi-final second leg against PSG, Arteta was asked how close his team are to winning a trophy.
“We are going to try to this season,” he responded. “Winning trophies is about being in the right moment, in the right place.
“Liverpool have won the title with fewer points than we had in the last two seasons. So you have to be in the right moment, in the right place.
“Hopefully here we are in the right moment and place in Paris tomorrow and earn the right to be in the final.”
If Arsenal are to end the season with a trophy, they will have to overturn a one-goal deficit from the home leg when they face PSG at the Parc des Princes.
Arteta says the north London outfit need to “embrace and take on the game to make something special” in order to reach the Champions League final.
“To get to a final you have to do something exceptional throughout the tournament,” he said. “We have done a lot of great things, but tomorrow in Paris we need to elevate it. To make history, we have opportunity to do it.”
