Mikel Arteta is wary of the threat of Manchester United ahead of Arsenal’s ‘beautiful’ FA Cup tie against the holders.
Arsenal host Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, in a fixture between the most successful side’s in the competition’s history. The two teams have been drawn together early on and Arteta is expecting a ‘beautiful game’ against their old rivals.
Arsenal last won this trophy in 2020, when Arteta led the North London side to silverware in his first season. It remains the last major honour the club have won.
“It’s a beautiful game to play against a massive club and they will bring lots of supporters,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference.
“The memory of winning something and sharing it with people is the ultimate goal.”
Manchester United arrive in North London in a state of transition. Ruben Amorim took over as head coach in November and has had a mixed start to his tenure. Arteta, however, is not underestimating the Red Devils despite their struggles in the Premier League.
He pointed to the club’s impressive performances against Manchester City and Liverpool as example of the threat United can pose and outlined his admiration for Amorim.
“Look at how they perform against the big teams and how they perform and the results they got,” the Spaniard said.
“I know him well, I followed him in Portugal and there is a big reason why he is where he is at the moment and he deserves to be there.
“Every manager when he is appointed is for different reasons. Sometimes it is to transform a football club.”
