The context 📅

This eighth match of the league season comes after the October international break. It was an occasion for the Rouge et Blanc to get back to winning ways against an Angers team that has been a good opponent for them: they have eight wins in their last nine against Le SCO, currently 17th in the top flight. The club from the Rock has not lost any of its last eight trips to Anjou (6 wins, 2 draws).

I expect my team to play with a good attitude on the pitch -- a positive, conquering spirit, knowing that it is difficult to play there. If we play with our principles, the ones I try to convey, I will already be very happy, even if everything will not be perfect, I am aware of that! But that is why I am here, to help the team progress from week to week.

The XI 👥

So for his first outing on the AS Monaco bench, despite  numerous absences, Sébastien Pocognoli decided to play a 3-4-2-1 from kickoff. Caio Henrique played in the central trio alongside his captain, Thilo Kehrer, while the duo of Teze-Coulibaly played in midfield.

The scenario 🎞

The match started timidly, even though more than 500 supporters of the Rocher club were making their voices heard in the away end! It was not until the 16th minute of play that the first shot was taken,  by Kassoum Ouattara on the right, just before Sbaï’s deflected attempt for Angers (20th). The first real scare, however, came from a volley by Mouton for Le SCO at the edge of the area, which went just wide (24′).

Chances but a lack of finishing

The former Saint-Etienne midfielder would then be involved again, with a header overhit by Peter (32′), in the wake of the saem by Monaco with Mika Biereth the creator and Ansu Fati on the receiving end (30′). Jordan Teze then tried from afar without precision (39′), before the last thrill of the first act with a header from Abdelli on a corner, cleared off his line by the Dutchman (45 + 2′).

Angers hit the woodwork

After the break, AS Monaco also tried their luck with a corner kick, as Mohammed Salisu’s header was nearly deflected into the net by Fati (47′). SCO then had the biggest chance, when Sbaï’s shot hit the post (50′)! The game was heating up, but Krépin Diatta’s powerful effort (56′) and Maghnes Akliouche’s chip failed to beat Koffi (57′).

Balo’ in super sub mode!

The visitors pushed on, and Folarin Balogun, who had just come on, found himself in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, which the latter won (69′). It was only a matter of time for the American, who then took advantage of Takumi Minamino’s perfect deflection to open the scoring with a cross shot (0-1, 72′)! It was Balo’s second goal in Ligue 1, and the 7th goal by a Monaco substitute this season in the top flight.

Turn an eye towards Tottenham

Unfortunately, after a flurry of substitutions, Angers came back to level terms with a quick-fire strike from Chérif, this time helped by the post (1-1, 85′). Despite the contribution of the substitutes, the Rouge et Blanc were unable to score a second time, and the two teams parted with a draw (1-1). The next match — in the Champions League this time — is on Wednesday at the Stade Louis-II against Tottenham (21:00).
