Ruben Amorim is navigating a slightly depleted defence for Saturday’s clash away to Nottingham Forest.

Earlier today, Manchester United’s club media revealed that Amorim had been granted a major boost in the form of Lisandro Martinez resuming first-team training.

However, the boss later confirmed in his press conference that, despite Martinez pleading to make his return this weekend, he would not be utilising the defender just yet.

Amorim would rather wait that little bit longer to ensure Martinez is truly, 100 per cent ready to play, after which he can start increasing his minutes for the first time since sustaining the anterior cruciate ligament injury in February.

Elsewhere, the head coach told reporters that Harry Maguire is a doubt to feature, having sustained a knock in the emphatic Anfield triumph 11 days ago.

The centre-half rose the highest in a packed Liverpool box to find the back of the net in the 84th minute, securing United’s first win on their arch rivals’ turf in nine-and-a-half years.

Prior to the game, the 32-year-old had been utilised sporadically by Amorim, making only two starts and being brought off the bench to see out matches on four occasions. For the win over Burnley at the end of August, he was an unused substitute.

Numerous reports have suggested that Maguire is currently in contract negotiations with the board after entering the final eight months of his current deal; United activated his one-year option at the beginning of the year to ensure he didn’t leave for nothing in June, like Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans (now retired) did.

It’s thought he will have to accept a pay cut on his lucrative £190,000-a-week wages if he is to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer of 2026.
