Shaun Wright-Phillips has told QPR who to appoint as their next manager
Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Ashley Cole should be considered for the QPR managerial vacancy.
The London outfit are currently searching for a replacement for Martí Cifuentes, who departed the club at the end of the campaign.
Cifuentes earned praise for his work with the Hoops, but a difficult run of form at the end of the season saw the team fall to 15th in the table.
QPR will be hoping to appoint someone that can improve on that position, and bring the team forward over the next 12 months.
Wright-Phillips has urged QPR to look at Ashley Cole or Lee Carlsey to take over the side for next season.
He has claimed that clubs in the EFL need to give these young English coaches a chance, suggesting Cole would be a great appointment.
“I think the Championship and League One clubs need to start taking chances on English managers that are waiting for a chance,” said Wright-Phillips, via West London Sport.
“Honestly, if I was them, I would approach Ashley Cole or Lee Carsley and just see, but I would love to see Ash get it because I think it would be unbelievable.”
Cole has yet to become a manager of a first team squad in his coaching career, but has previously worked in the EFL.
He was a part of Frank Lampard’s backroom staff at Derby County, as well as at Chelsea.
The 44-year-old also worked with the England U21s as an assistant manager under Carsley before returning to coaching work with Lampard when he moved to Everton.
Cole also took on a role as an assistant to Wayne Rooney during his brief spell in charge at Birmingham City, but now plies his trade with the FA.
It’s difficult for clubs to take the plunge on appointing someone with no track record as a manager.
Given QPR’s position, they are especially unlikely to take that risk as getting the wrong person in at the wrong time could lead to relegation to League One.
Cifuentes was a left-field appointment last time out, and his lack of experience in English football was a concern, but he had a proven track record elsewhere they could point to.
If Cole is serious about becoming a manager then taking on a job in the EFL is certainly a great starting point, but QPR are unlikely to provide that platform at this time.
