German outlet Bild, via Sport Witness, reported on Monday that Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt is looking for a move to the Premier League this summer, with Aston Villa pushing to make him their primary summer target. The 29-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of this season.

BVB publicly confirmed his departure following Saturday’s Bundesliga victory over 1. FC Köln, where sporting director Sebastian Kehl told reporters that the club and player had mutually agreed to part ways. Brandt is keen to test himself in England, and that Villa and Newcastle United currently lead the chase, though Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the situation while their top-flight status remains uncertain.

Brandt spent seven years at Signal Iduna Park, winning the DFB-Pokal and reaching the Champions League final, and departs having scored 98 goals for the club. His versatility gives him options that few free agents at this level can offer; he operates as a No.10, on either wing, or deeper in midfield.

Since arriving at Dortmund in 2019, Brandt has featured in more than 40 games across all competitions every single season. His availability on a free transfer has drawn serious interest from clubs across Europe, but the Premier League is his stated preferred destination, though interest from Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia exists.

Would Brandt Actually Solve Aston Villa’s Real Problem?

The honest answer is yes, but Villa need to know exactly what they are getting. Brandt is a technically gifted, experienced European footballer who costs nothing in transfer fees, and players who fit that profile at 29 do not come around often. His 23 per cent goal conversion rate in the Bundesliga this season, zero errors leading to goals, and a 50 per cent dribble completion rate show a composed, reliable midfielder who rarely wastes moments.

Villa, who sit fourth in the Premier League with 51 points and are chasing Champions League qualification, have been badly hampered by midfield injuries this season, with John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, and Boubacar Kamara all missing at various points, stripping the side of creativity and experience through the centre. Brandt fixes that problem with his eyes closed, at least in theory.

His weaknesses are worth examining honestly, though. He has spent his entire career in the Bundesliga, first at Bayer Leverkusen, then Dortmund, and at 29, he arrives, never having played in a faster, more physical league. That matters more than it sounds. The Premier League has exposed technically polished players before, particularly those who rely on space and time rather than aggression.

Villa’s chance-creation has been one of their clearest deficiencies this season. Brandt would help there, but the speed of his adaptation becomes crucial when Villa need results. The Morgan Rogers situation then shifts the entire conversation. Roberto Olabe now has a quality potential replacement available at no cost, while Villa could generate up to £85 million in PSR benefit by moving Rogers on. When the finances stack up that cleanly, signing Brandt stops feeling like a luxury and starts feeling like the obvious move. If Emery gets the onboarding right and gives him time to settle, this one could work very well for Villa.
