Aston Villa have been trying to establish themselves as a stable force in the English Premier League for the past few seasons. Under the coaching of Unai Emery, the club’s performance have improved a lot. They sent a strong message by qualifying for European football last season, but the team still struggles with some weak spots, especially in the goalkeeping position. With transfer talks surrounding Emiliano Martinez constantly hovering around, stability in this position is a must for the club.

The management has been active in bringing in a new goalkeeper in this summer’s transfer window. Some names like John Victor have been on the club’s list, but Villa had made another big attempt, which has now come to light. The club tried to look for an experienced and reliable option, which makes it clear that they are looking for a solid number one, not just for squad depth.

Big bid for Alex Remiro from Aston Villa and a direct denial

According to a report in the Spanish newspaper COPE, both Aston Villa and Newcastle United had shown interest in Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro. Both clubs tried their best to get him in this summer transfer window. The report says that they were even willing to trigger his release clause of €70 million, but the player has rejected these offers as he wants to stay at Reale Arena.

Remiro is an experienced and quality goalkeeper whose biggest strengths are his positioning and concentration. He has been playing consistently well for Sociedad and has established himself as one of the most reliable keepers in La Liga. At this age, he is in his prime, and hence, he does not want to leave his club at the moment.

Have Villa suffered a setback?

This rejection can be considered a direct setback. Aston Villa not only showed interest in the player but also had made up their mind to take a big financial step. A sum of €70 million is no small matter for any club, especially one like Villa, who use their resources wisely. Remiro’s “no” will surely affect their plans.

However, despite this refusal, Villa still have a chance. Emiliano Martinez’s future is uncertain, but the club must make a quick and strong decision. More focus must be put on options like John Victor. Remiro is a quality goalkeeper, but if the player himself doesn’t want to come, the club will have to look for new options. This refusal is a reminder—transfers are driven not just by money, but also by desire.
