Aston Villa are on the brink of securing the signing of Dutch international Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, with the deal now nearing completion. According to Bild, The 25-year-old winger has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Premier League club, and negotiations between the two sides have advanced significantly.
Villa’s latest offer has brought them closer to Dortmund’s €25 million asking price, setting the stage for the transfer to be finalised soon.
Aston Villa are making a calculated effort to bolster their attacking options, and Donyell Malen has emerged as a priority for manager Unai Emery. Renowned for his ability to play across various forward positions, Malen is seen as a perfect fit for a team competing on multiple fronts this season. His signing would help fill the void left by Moussa Diaby’s departure earlier in the summer, as well as Jaden Philogene’s expected move to Ipswich Town.
Malen’s versatility is a key factor in Villa’s pursuit, as the club looks to maintain its strong form in the Premier League and other competitions. His capacity to adapt to different roles in the attack would provide Emery with the depth and flexibility needed to handle a packed schedule.
The Dutch winger began his career in the youth academies of Ajax and Arsenal before making his professional breakthrough at PSV Eindhoven. In 2021, he joined Borussia Dortmund for €30 million.
Although his time in Germany has not fully met expectations, Malen has remained a valuable player for Dortmund. This season, he has scored five goals and registered one assist in 21 appearances, including three goals in the Bundesliga.
Reports from Germany suggest that Villa’s improved bid has brought them closer to meeting Dortmund’s valuation of Malen. Initially, the Bundesliga side had set a price of €30 million, but they are now willing to accept a fee in the region of €25 million. This aligns with Villa’s latest offer, and the two clubs are reportedly close to finalising the agreement.
Malen has already agreed to personal terms with Aston Villa and is prepared to make the move to Villa Park. However, Dortmund manager Nuri Şahin may still consider including him in their upcoming DFB-Pokal match against Holstein Kiel on Tuesday, as the team is dealing with injuries. Malen’s recent appearance in Dortmund’s 3-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, where he came off the bench in the 78th minute, highlights his continued importance to the squad.
Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest in Malen, but Aston Villa appear to be leading the race for his signature. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are eager to finalise the sale to support their own transfer plans.
The German club is reportedly targeting Chelsea’s Renato Veiga as a potential signing, and the funds from Malen’s transfer would provide the financial flexibility needed to pursue new players.
If the deal is completed, Malen’s arrival would be a significant boost for Aston Villa. His skills and experience would strengthen the team’s attacking line-up as they aim to continue their impressive performances in the Premier League and other competitions.
