Aston Villa have been fined £19 million for breaching UEFA financial rules last year, with a large part of the punishment suspended.

UEFA said in a statement that two-thirds of the sanction is suspended after it noted improving trends in Villa’s squad cost ratio between 2024 and 2025, with the remainder conditional on a further decrease in 2026.

Villa will pay an initial £6.3 million and can avoid the rest if their finances continue to be brought into line in 2026.

It is their second UEFA sanction, following a £9.5 million fine for breaching both cost control and football earnings rules.

The latest case relates solely to cost control regulations, which limit spending on wages, transfer fees and agents’ fees to 70% of revenue during the 2025 calendar year.

The sanction is the second largest issued to any club, behind Strasbourg.

Villa entered a three-year settlement agreement with UEFA last summer and have remained in close contact with the governing body.
