Aston Villa have been fined £19 million for breaching UEFA financial rules last year, with £6.3 million due immediately and the remainder largely suspended.

UEFA said the sanction relates to cost control regulations capping spending at 70 per cent of revenues on wages, transfer fees and agents’ fees during the 2025 calendar year.

It is Villa’s second UEFA punishment in successive summers, after a £9.5 million fine last year for breaching cost control and football earnings rules.

The latest total, 22m euros for exceeding the limits, is the second largest issued to any club behind Strasbourg, and two-thirds has been suspended after improving trends were noted.

Villa will avoid paying the suspended portion if they continue to bring finances into line in 2026. An improving squad cost ratio between 2024 and 2025 was taken into account, and the suspension depends on a further reduction in 2026.

Villa entered a three-year settlement agreement with UEFA last summer and have remained in close contact with the governing body.
