Aston Villa’s opening gambit for Emerson Royal has been swiftly knocked back by Flamengo. The West Midlands club tabled a formal package worth €9 million, roughly 53 million Brazilian Reais, to bring the former Tottenham Hotspur full-back back to the Premier League.
The Rio de Janeiro giants dismissed the offer out of hand. Journalist Bruno Lemos broke the news on social media, though lines of communication between the two clubs remain open.
Emerson only moved to the Maracanã in July 2025 for that same €9 million fee following a rather forgettable stint with AC Milan. He has completely rebuilt his reputation in South America. 40 appearances, one goal, and five assists later, the 27-year-old defender is a key asset. Flamengo hold all the cards here. With a long-term contract locking the player down until December 2028, the Brazilians are quite rightly holding out for a tidy profit.

Paying anything over €12 million for Emerson Royal makes zero sense for Aston Villa in this current summer window. None at all.
Roberto Olabe and the recruitment team have to be incredibly smart with their cash right now. UEFA’s strict squad cost rules are biting hard. Every single penny must be preserved, especially with massive interest circling star midfielder Morgan Rogers, who now commands an £80 million valuation.
Throwing a premium fee at a defender who struggled immensely with the technical demands of English football during his time in North London is a massive gamble. A risk Aston Villa don’t need to take. Unai Emery’s system demands an auxiliary centre-back on the right, someone who can seamlessly tuck inside to form a fluid back-three when the left-back marauds forward. Emerson rarely, if ever, looked comfortable fulfilling that specific tactical brief under his previous Premier League managers. He is a square peg for a round hole.
Bleeding valuable resources on defensive cover will restrict the club’s broader ambitions in the market. Villa have massive European commitments on the horizon. The squad needs genuine quality, not expensive utility options.
The hierarchy should pivot immediately. Look at the free-agent market. Find younger profiles with high sell-on potential instead of inflating bids for a known quantity. If Flamengo refuse to budge from their current financial stance, Villa must simply walk away.
