Emiliano Martinez is expected to be reintegrated into Aston Villa’s squad after the goalkeeper failed to secure a move to Manchester United on transfer deadline day. The Athletic revealed that the Argentina international was left out of Unai Emery’s squad for the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace as uncertainty around his future clouded the build-up.
“Emi (Martinez) is fine,” said Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, speaking during the international break. “In the end, his transfer didn’t happen, but yesterday was his birthday and I saw him happy. Of course, he must have been excited about the idea of playing for Manchester United, as people have said, but he’s a positive kid. He’s already focused on us and when he returns to his club, he’ll be focused on them.”

Back at Bodymoor Heath, the focus is now on how Martinez responds to a failed move. He had spent deadline day waiting at the training ground for a call that never came. Instead, Manchester United opted for Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp, leaving the 33-year-old World Cup winner without the switch he had hoped for.
The manager’s frustration was clear. “It’s not helping us,” Emery said following the Palace loss. “We have a lot of circumstances that are not helping us to be mentally like we were last year. We need players focused and 100 per cent and he wasn’t.”
That admission leaves little room for ambiguity. Emery’s squad has endured a sluggish start, with off-field distractions like Martinez’s situation undermining the unity that defined last season’s European push. Villa’s manager is not willing to carry passengers, and Martinez’s reintegration will depend entirely on his mental readiness.

Sources close to the club told The Athletic that the plan is for Martinez to be available for selection after the international break, but that could shift if he fails to show full commitment. Martinez’s desire to play for United was no secret. He even enlisted Argentina team-mate Lisandro Martinez to advocate on his behalf with the United hierarchy. But aside from a loan enquiry early in the window, nothing concrete arrived.
The focus now must turn to resolving the situation rather than letting it fester. As The Athletic noted, “Villa cannot afford to let the issue simmer and continue to be a talking point over the next weeks and months. A solution or compromise has to be found until at least January.”
In the meantime, Marco Bizot has deputised well, despite conceding a penalty against Palace. Viewed internally as a smart summer acquisition and an upgrade on Robin Olsen, Bizot has proven he can step up. Still, Villa know Martinez brings more than just shot-stopping. His presence, leadership and aura as a two-time Yashin Trophy winner are irreplaceable.
Martinez remains, at his best, one of the league’s most commanding keepers. If he can channel his disappointment into motivation, he could yet play a vital role in steadying Villa’s campaign. But if the emotional hangover lingers, Emery may be forced to look ahead without him.
For Aston Villa fans, this saga evokes both concern and cautious optimism. Emi Martinez has been a central figure in the club’s rise under Emery, offering match-winning saves, elite mentality and vocal leadership. Seeing him sidelined over contract and transfer uncertainty disrupts the momentum built last season.
However, supporters will recognise the professionalism Martinez has shown in the past. He was instrumental in their European qualification and World Cup triumphs with Argentina. Fans will be hoping the Old Trafford dream was a temporary distraction rather than a complete disengagement from the Villa project.
There is also quiet confidence in Marco Bizot. His performances suggest that Villa’s recruitment team have again found value and depth in key areas. Yet it remains clear: Villa are stronger with Martinez focused and between the sticks.
If Emery can manage the situation calmly and restore harmony, then Villa can put a forgettable summer behind them. A refreshed Martinez could once again be the difference in tight contests. The fans have seen this movie before, they just want a happier ending this time.
