Spanish outlet AS reported this week that Aston Villa face a real fight if they want to sign Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde this summer. The paper points to the influence of super-agent Jorge Mendes, who manages the 22-year-old. Apparently, Balde’s future is third on Mendes’ priority list at Camp Nou right now, following a busy year where Lamine Yamal’s contract took the spotlight. According to AS, Balde pops up in transfer rumours almost every summer, and this year is no different.

Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Manchester United reportedly reached out about the defender back in late March. Barcelona know a sale would bring in a huge windfall, with Transfermarkt valuing him at roughly £47 million. It is a massive profit for a homegrown talent.

However, the report makes it clear that neither Deco nor Hansi Flick are forcing him out. More importantly, the player himself isn’t looking to leave yet. While his contract runs until 2028, Barcelona need to make a call soon to avoid his value dipping as he nears his final years. Their public stance against selling often masks a silent willingness to listen to high offers. (Via Sport Witness)

The reality behind Aston Villa’s reported interest

Balde has played 20 La Liga games this season, clocking 1,431 minutes with two assists and a 91.54% pass completion rate. His tackle success has jumped to 62.67%, up from 39.2% last year, and he ranks 13th in the league for expected threat from defence. These stats show a player who handles the dirty work while staying creative on the wing.

He’s fast, keeps possession well, and has Champions League experience at a young age. On the flip side, his aerial success has dipped to 58.33%, and he’s been bullied a bit more in defensive transitions. Physical wingers can still give him trouble.

Do Villa actually need him?

Lucas Digne is 32 and recently extended his deal to 2028, but his age is a factor. Ian Maatsen currently has the edge at left-back, though his long-term status is a bit up in the air. If Villa stay in the top four, they’ll need world-class depth. Balde isn’t a bench player; he’s a Spain international who fits a top-six starting XI.

Balde will probably leave Barcelona, but likely not for Villa. The Manchester clubs offer more financial muscle, and those are the deals Mendes usually prioritises. For Aston Villa, it is a good move on paper, but it is a tough sell financially while Digne and Maatsen are still there. Unless Digne moves on, spending around £47 million here feels like a reach. Villa should watch the situation, let the big spenders move first, and only jump in if the price drops in late July. That’s just smart business.
