Aston Villa are monitoring Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford (23) as they consider long-term options in the event Emiliano Martinez leaves the club this summer.
According to Sky Sports, Villa are prepared to listen to offers for Martinez, whose future has been the subject of speculation for some time. The Argentina international came close to departing last summer, with Manchester United said to have held interest before ultimately opting to sign Senne Lammens instead.
Martinez has been a key figure in Villa’s rise under Unai Emery, but with the club continuing to reshape its squad to compete at the top end of the Premier League, plans are being made for potential change in goal.
Trafford has emerged as a leading candidate. The former Burnley keeper was signed by City in a deal worth up to £31m, but his opportunities have been limited following the club’s decision to also bring in Gianluigi Donnarumma during the same transfer window. Trafford has made just 14 appearances in all competitions, though his reputation remains strong and he recently earned his first England cap during the latest international break.
Villa’s interest suggests they view Trafford as a goalkeeper with significant upside, capable of developing into a long-term first-choice option. Any move would depend on City’s willingness to negotiate and whether Martinez ultimately decides to seek a new challenge.
