Aston Villa will look to take a giant stride towards the Europa League knockout stages when they welcome Swiss champions Young Boys to Villa Park on Thursday evening.
Unai Emery’s side are in formidable form, having won nine of their last 11 matches in all competitions. In contrast, Young Boys have struggled defensively on the continent and have never won a European match on English soil.
Unai Emery is managing a few injury concerns. Defender Tyrone Mings and winger Andrés García remain sidelined. Additionally, midfielder Amadou Onana will be assessed after missing the weekend win. However, Ross Barkley is now eligible for the Europa League squad and could start. The manager is expected to rotate, with Donyell Malen potentially leading the line in place of Ollie Watkins.
The visitors have several absentees. Midfielder Armin Gigovic is suspended, while Edimilson Fernandes, Zachary Athekame, and Facinet Conte are injured. Despite this, top scorer Chris Bedia, who has 14 goals this season, is expected to start. English full-back Ryan Andrews is battling for a spot on the right side of defence.
After a slow start to the season, Villa have been superb. They have won nine of their last 11 matches, with their only blemishes being defeats to Go Ahead Eagles and Liverpool. Crucially, Villa Park has become a fortress; they have won 14 of their last 16 home games in all competitions. In Europe, they sit sixth in the table with nine points from four games.
The Swiss champions are in mixed form in Europe, sitting 22nd in the table. They have conceded 10 goals in four matches, the worst defensive record in the competition. However, their domestic form is strong, having recently thrashed Winterthur 5-0. They are historically poor in England, failing to win in six previous visits.
Aston Villa predicted XI: Martinez; Lindelof, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Bogarde, Barkley; Guessand, Rogers, Sancho; Malen
Young Boys predicted XI: Keller; Andrews, Lauper, Zoukrou, Hadjam; Raveloson, Pech; Fassnacht, Sanches, Virginius; Bedia
The match will be broadcast live in the UK on TNT Sports 2 and TNT Sports Ultimate. Coverage starts at 5:00 pm GMT.
