Alessio Romagnoli’s future remains uncertain, with Al-Sadd yet to finalise a move for the Lazio defender and Atalanta ready to act if it falls through.

Corriere dello Sport reports that Romagnoli is prioritising a switch abroad and is holding out accordingly. Al-Sadd have returned with fresh payment terms on a fee of three million euros, to which Claudio Lotito has issued a counter, leaving both parties awaiting the next move.

The outlook was not especially encouraging as recently as 48 hours ago, though the coming hours could prove decisive. Part of the delay is said to stem from Al-Sadd, who are grappling with financial constraints that have complicated their pursuit.

For Romagnoli, the appeal is the substantial financial package and a wish to leave Italy out of respect for the Lazio support. He saluted the fanbase with a video message during the mass protest against the club’s ownership on 2 July.

If the Qatari move collapses, attention would quickly shift to alternatives, with Atalanta foremost. The Bergamo club are boosted by Maurizio Sarri, who worked with Romagnoli at Lazio, views him as a priority and has already made personal contact.

For now, focus is on Doha and whether Al-Sadd can meet Lotito’s terms. If they cannot, Sarri and Atalanta could capitalise, and the defender may yet remain in Serie A.
