Spain had struck first through former Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz, who finished from close range, before De Ketelaere levelled with a deft glancing header.

Simon had earlier surpassed Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga’s benchmark of 517 minutes set at Italia ’90, with the Spain run stretching across two editions of the tournament.

It was De Ketelaere’s third goal in two games for Belgium, after he produced a brace and an assist in the 4-1 Round of 16 win over the USMNT.

The winner of this quarter-final will face France in the semi-final.
