Athletic are in mourning after the death of Manuel González Etura, one of the three surviving Once Aldeanos who won the Cup against Real Madrid at Real Madrid's own stadium. He was 93.
As reported by as.com, he epitomised the team-first midfielder and is remembered for subduing Alfredo Di Stéfano in that unforgettable match. He was warm, down-to-earth and active at club events. His final public appearances came in 2019, when he was honoured with surviving team-mates and attended the 125th anniversary statue unveiling for close friend Jose Angel Iribar.
Etura arrived from Getxo after beginnings with Arana de Barakaldo and San Pedro. He spent 13 seasons as a Lion, making 247 appearances. He won three Copas, in 1955 and 1956 under Ferdinand Daucik, then in 1958 with Baltasar Albéniz.
The 1956 campaign ended in a double after a league title was secured. European glory eluded him following defeat to Manchester United in the tie, despite featuring in the 5-3 win amid heavy snow at San Mamés.
Athletic will wear black armbands on Sunday against Real Betis in his memory, one day before his funeral at the parish church of San Felicísimo de Deusto at 19:00. Goian bego.
