Athletico have rowed back on a move for Corinthians defender Cacá. Talks had taken place over a return, but the club are not expected to push ahead.

According to Globo.com, the shift stems chiefly from an outstanding Corinthians debt tied to the 2024 signing of midfielder Alex Santana. Early last year Athletico sued the São Paulo side, seeking R$ 12.3 million over two overdue instalments.

President Mario Celso Petraglia will not accept the debt being used in negotiations for Cacá and wants the sum paid in full.

Corinthians have not received formal notice of Athletico’s withdrawal and have set a single condition for any talks, a sale only.

Athletico’s loan proposal for Cacá was promptly rejected by Corinthians.

Cacá is recovering from an abdominal injury that ruled him out of Sunday’s derby with São Paulo in the Campeonato Paulista. He started the 3-0 defeat to Red Bull Bragantino at right-back, then felt pain and required treatment.

The 26-year-old played for Athletico in 2023 and joined Corinthians in 2024. His contract runs until the end of 2028.
