Nico González ignited Atlético as Simeone’s bench again changed the game against Real Sociedad, with Antoine Griezmann providing the spark. AS notes the substitutes tilted the contest after a laboured start.
Oblak was beaten by a Carlos Soler rocket, then Oyarzabal found the top corner. Giménez flicked a Giuliano long throw for Sorloth to finish. The striker then battled for every cross as Real Sociedad sat deep.
Nahuel offered width, and Ruggeri crossed superbly for Nico’s header. Hancko took his first Atlético booking despite being the squad’s most-used player, and Remiro denied him.
Mendoza departed with an ankle problem before the break and will have tests. Llorente came on, later partnering Cardoso. A triple change on 54 minutes introduced Griezmann, Nico and Julián Álvarez after quiet displays from Almada and Lookman.
Nico drove from both flanks, arrived in the box and scored, then threatened more on his return from injury. Griezmann conjured a lovely assist for him, and his future now appears settled. Álvarez added movement, though the finish deserted him.
Koke knitted play for an hour, Giuliano’s throw remained a weapon, and Sorloth pressed tirelessly. Cardoso looks a clear starter against Tottenham. Oblak conceded twice, and Musso is set to start the Copa del Rey final.
