According to Mundo Deportivo, Atlético de Madrid have abandoned their move for João Gomes, leaving the Brazilian’s immediate future looking likely to remain in English football.

The Madrid club had a preliminary agreement with Wolverhampton at around €40 million, about R$ 255 million, but talks cooled and a switch to the Metropolitano is now viewed as unlikely.

The change followed a breakdown between Atlético’s hierarchy and Jorge Mendes, who represents João Gomes and Bernardo Silva.

Club figures felt commitments made during attempts to sign Bernardo Silva were not honoured. Atlético believed they were close and even raised their offer, but Real Madrid entered, advanced talks and agreed a deal, which angered the board.

The Spaniards are now assessing alternative midfield options, with Morten Hjulmand among their priorities for this window.

João Gomes remains contracted to Wolverhampton and retains strong market value in Europe. Flamengo hold 10 percent of a future sale plus four percent as a training club, worth roughly R$ 21 million, so the setback is a financial blow to the Rio side.
