Iconic Italian coach Fabio Capello criticized Cristian Chivu after Inter Milan’s frustrating 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid last night. 

Speaking to Sky Sport via FCInter1908, Capello delivered his verdict on Chivu’s in-game management.

Diego Simeone’s side denied the Nerazzurri a historic European feat at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Indeed, Inter failed to start a new Champions League season with five consecutive wins for the first time in the club’s history.

Furthermore, goals from Julian Alvarez and Jose Maria Gimenez condemned Inter to their first European loss under Cristian Chivu.

Meanwhile, the 20-time Italian champions have now failed to win their last 13 away UEFA clashes against Spanish opposition.

Unfortunately, Piotr Zielinski saw his first Champions League goal in the Nerazzurri shirt go in vain as the visitors collapsed late in Madrid.

As a result, Chivu could be staring down the barrel of three successive defeats when his side meet Pisa on Sunday.

“Inter could have won,” Capello claimed. “It was a good performance, but you can’t give away matches like that in the final minute.

“Too many changes, and they probably didn’t find their positions.

“Atletico’s goal was irregular,” Capello insisted. “There was a handball by the Atletico player.”

However, Capello maintained that Chivu had to keep his side motivated after equaling the score.

“After the equalizer, Inter becomes an amorphous team,” he continued. “They don’t press and flatten out.

“The determination they showed before disappears. They score and then sit back.

“This is a trait that Chivu hasn’t been able to eliminate.

“When you make so many changes, it becomes very difficult to hold your positions.

“And if you don’t put an obstacle in front of a player like Gimenez, strong in the air…”

Despite last night’s upset, Inter can still secure automatic last-16 qualification.
