Barcelona went back to the top of La Liga on Sunday night after coming from behind in a six-goal thriller against Atletico Madrid, with a decisive stoppage time strike from Lamine Yamal.
Only one point separated the sides before kick-off in the Spanish capital, with Real Madrid having moved into first place 24 hours earlier with victory in their fixture against Villarreal.
Atletico drew first blood at the end of the first half through Julian Alvarez, quickly putting his harsh Champions League penalty shootout nightmare behind him.
Diego Simeone’s then went 2-0 up when Alexander Sorloth scored a second with only 20 minutes to play, which pointed towards a result that would have put Atletico right back amongst it. But things quickly and uncharacteristically fell apart as Barcelona then scored four without reply.
Robert Lewandowski got the ball rolling when he fired low into the corner just two minutes after Sorloth’s goal. Six minutes after that, Ferran Torres headed in from close-range to draw Barcelona level and set up a grandstand finish that could have huge implications come May.
Into stoppage time, Yamal came up with a masterstroke, skipping infield past an attempted tackle before unleashing a curling strike from 25 yards into the top corner.
There was even still time for Barca to add a buffer, with Raphinha pressuring Atletico into giving the ball away from a throw-in in their own half, paving the way for Torres to collect the ball and drive a low shot past Jan Oblak from just outside the box.
Barcelona have now won seven in a row in La Liga. They are level on points with Real Madrid, but sit top thanks to a superior head to head record following October's 4-0 win at the Bernabeu, and also have a game still in their arsenal.
