Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez will miss the club’s Champions League clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night after suffering a knee injury.
Alvarez has not been included in the 22-man squad named by Diego Simeone, as the Spanish side begin their European campaign at Anfield.
It’s a major blow to the Rojiblancos, with Alvarez having scored 29 goals in 57 games during an impressive debut season in Madrid last term.
The Argentine was named Atletico’s Player of the Season in 2024/25, after joining from Manchester City in a high-profile deal.
The 25-year-old had been a player Liverpool considered signing in each of the last two summer transfer windows.
Alvarez’s absence is not the only blow for Atletico, who are also without centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez, and midfielders Johnny Cardoso, Thiago Almada and Alex Baena.
