Barcelona could be facing a significant setback in their pursuit of a new centre-forward, as Atletico Madrid intensify efforts to secure the long-term future of Julian Alvarez.

It is known that the Argentine striker has emerged as Barcelona’s top attacking target for life beyond Robert Lewandowski.

However, recent developments suggest that prising him away from the Spanish capital could prove far more difficult than initially expected.

According to MARCA, Atletico Madrid are preparing a lucrative contract extension for their star forward in a bid to fend off growing interest.

The club’s strategy is to strengthen their project around Alvarez and eliminate any temptation for him to consider a move elsewhere.

Atletico are very serious

Currently under contract until 2030, Alvarez is already tied down long-term, but Atletico are willing to go even further.

The proposed offer includes a salary increase from €7 million to €10 million per year, which would place him among the highest earners in the squad. In that, €9 million would be fixed.

In addition, they are considering extending his deal by one or two more years to fend off interest.

Importantly, despite serious interest, Atletico have made it clear that Alvarez is not for sale.

This means the only scenario in which negotiations would even be considered is if the player himself explicitly expresses a desire to leave. At this stage, that has not happened publicly.

What about Barcelona’s interest?

There are indications that his representatives are aware of Barcelona’s interest, and discussions have taken place informally.

However, no decisive step has been taken, leaving the situation in a delicate balance.

Financially, the operation remains complex, as Alvarez has a staggering €500 million release clause, effectively shutting the door on any direct approach.

Barcelona, for their part, would only consider a move if the player pushes for an exit and the transfer fee remains within a manageable range – reportedly below €80 million.
