Barcelona’s search for young defensive talent could be heading towards a crucial week, with Atletico Madrid now firmly entering the race to sign highly-rated Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas.
The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in Spanish football after an outstanding campaign with Racing.
Despite his young age, Salinas played a key role in the club’s promotion push and has quickly built a reputation as a player capable of operating both as a left-back and a central defender.
That versatility is one of the reasons why several clubs have been monitoring his progress. According to AS, Atletico have already opened discussions with Racing as they look to strengthen the left side of their defence, while Barcelona remain among the clubs most interested in securing the teenager’s services.
Racing have long accepted that keeping Salinas will be difficult. Sporting director Chema Aragon previously suggested that the Spain Under-19 international would be playing Champions League football sooner rather than later.
Barcelona’s interest in Salinas makes perfect sense when viewed through the club’s long-term planning. The youngster fits a profile the sporting department have targeted repeatedly in recent years: talented, versatile, already exposed to professional football and with significant room for development.
However, the situation is becoming increasingly competitive. Atletico are not the only threat. Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, are monitoring the defender.
The timing may also work against Barcelona if a decision is delayed. Salinas currently has a release clause of €8 million, but that figure is set to double to €16 million from 1 July.
From a Barcelona perspective, this is exactly the type of opportunity the club cannot afford to lose lightly. The club have been firm that they will not overpay, but they need to make a decision.
Salinas may not arrive with the headlines of a superstar signing, but players of his profile often become the backbone of successful squads years later.
