Barcelona’s midfield depth has been one of their biggest strengths this season, but it could soon become a source of difficult decisions. 

The latest development suggests that Atletico Madrid are already positioning themselves to take advantage of any uncertainty.

According to AS, Atletico Madrid sporting director Mateu Alemany recently held talks with the agent of Marc Bernal, signalling serious interest from the Madrid-based club.

The outlet mentions that Atletico are actively building for the future, targeting young, high-potential players who can grow within their system, and Bernal fits that profile perfectly. 

At just 18, he has already shown maturity beyond his years, earning the trust of Hansi Flick and exciting the Barcelona fanbase with his composure and intelligence in midfield.

Midfield congestion at Barcelona

Bernal is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, which ruled him out of the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final and leaves him doubtful for the decisive return leg at the Metropolitano. 

While that has temporarily paused his momentum, it has not diminished his reputation internally or externally.

The Barcelona midfielder, as such, is stacked with established names like Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Casado all competing for minutes.

That level of competition naturally creates uncertainty for emerging players, even those highly rated by the coaching staff.

Bernal, however, is not just another option, he is seen as part of the club’s future. 

His recent contract renewal until 2029 reinforces Barcelona’s long-term commitment, making it clear that they are not actively looking to part ways with him.

Casado walking on thin ice

Interestingly, if there is to be movement in midfield, the more likely departure appears to be Casado. 

The youngster has slipped down the pecking order under Flick, and both the club and player are reportedly open to exploring a potential exit. 

That dynamic could indirectly influence how Barcelona handle external interest in Bernal.

From Atletico’s side, they are not rushing, but they are watching closely. The meeting with Bernal’s agent is a clear indication that they want to be ready if even the slightest opportunity presents itself.
