Atletico Madrid are yet to decide whether to revive their long-standing interest in Cristian Romero (27), with doubts emerging over a potential summer move for the Tottenham Hotspur defender, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The Spanish side previously explored a deal last year, but Romero remained in north London and later signed a new contract under head coach Thomas Frank. However, with Tottenham enduring a difficult campaign, uncertainty has once again surrounded the future of their captain.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has openly admired Romero, describing himself as a “big fan” of the World Cup winner. Yet, sources suggest there is no unanimous agreement within the club’s hierarchy to pursue the transfer.

Financial considerations are likely to prove decisive. Atletico are believed to value Romero at around £26m, significantly below what Spurs would demand for a player under contract until 2029. Additional factors, including Tottenham’s league status and the player’s own ambitions, further complicate any potential deal.

For now, Romero remains focused on the immediate challenge of steering Tottenham clear of danger. But with interest expected from across Europe, his long-term future appears far from settled.
