Atletico Madrid make the trip to Levante on Saturday evening in LaLiga as they look to bounce back from a surprise Champions League defeat.
Diego Simeone’s side were victorious in their most recent league outing, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Mallorca, a result that lifted them into third place with 44 points from 21 league fixtures. Sorloth opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, Thiago Almada struck late in the 87th minute, and an own goal completed a dominant performance.
Just days later, however, Atletico slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Bodø/Glimt in Europe.
Antoine Griezmann remains unavailable, as he continues to recover from a minor hamstring problem sustained in training. The 34-year-old forward has undergone scans to assess the damage, and while his comeback hinges on how the injury evolves, the latest indications are that he will not be ready in time for this fixture.
Giuliano Simeone is also expected to miss out, as he has been suffering from a fever and was ruled out by Diego Simeone in his pre-match media duties. His absence further reduces the manager’s options in the attacking midfield area and forces a rethink in terms of creativity and pressing from the second line.
Atletico are set to line up in their familiar 4-4-2 structure, with Jan Oblak continuing between the posts. Marcos Llorente and David Hancko are likely to operate as the fullbacks, while Marc Pubill joins Jose Maria Gimenez at the heart of the defence. In midfield, Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios should anchor the central positions, with the forward line led by Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez. The right flank is expected to be filled by either Thiago Almada or Alex Baena, with the final decision to be made closer to kick-off.
Possible Atletico Madrid starting XI: Oblak; Llorente, Pubill, Gimenez, Hancko; Gonzalez, Cardoso, Barrios, Almada; Sorloth, Alvarez
The match will kick off at 5:30pm BST on Saturday, 31st January.
For viewers in the United Kingdom, Levante vs Atletico Madrid will be broadcast live on LaLiga TV and will also be available via Premier Sports Extra and the Premier Sports Player streaming service.
