Club Brugge and Atlético Madrid played out a first leg that was clearly the match of the round in the Champions League this week. The Belgian struck late to earn a 3-3 draw in an end to end game that captivated all who watched it. Speaking to the media after the game, Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone was full of praise for Club Brugge, while also far from impressed with his own team.
As reported by HLN, Simeone said ‘All the teams that came here, except Arsenal, struggled and conceded goals. Club Brugge is a very dynamic team, and we knew it wouldn’t be easy here. We did well against an opponent who isn’t easy to beat, especially not at home’. It means that the Atlético Madrid head coach has still not been able to win a game in Brugge, despite leading so close to the end.
Looking forward to the match in Madrid, Simeone wanted to see more from his side. The Atlético Madrid head coach said that his side must ‘improve, everything has to improve‘ if they are wanting to make it through to the next round of the Champions League.
Club Brugge, on the other hand, will be hoping to have Carlos Forbs back for the away tie. His pace could certainly be an asset away from home. The former Wolves man missed the first leg and has been one of the sides best players in the competition this season.
