Who is Finn Dahmen, the half-German-half-English goalkeeper dazzling for Augsburg?

From a backheel goal to a club-record clean-sheet streak, Finn Dahmen has made a habit of catching the eye. Now Augsburg’s established No.1 and part of Germany’s senior squad, the goalkeeper with an English mother is targeting his next big career milestone.

Key statsBorn in Wiesbaden, Dahmen joined Mainz's academy in 2008 and worked his way through the ranks before making his Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich in January 2021. He helped Germany win the U21 European Championship later that year, but opportunities at club level remained limited. Dahmen played 31 league games in his first Augsburg campaign before injury disrupted his progress. Having regained his place during 2024/25, however, he embarked on a remarkable run of 433 minutes without conceding. The sequence included six consecutive clean sheets and set a club record before Andrej Kramarić's penalty for Hoffenheim ended it in March 2025. Recognition followed with a place in the VDV team of the season, alongside a contract extension at Augsburg until June 2027.He featured in all 34 Bundesliga matches in 2025/26 as Augsburg finished ninth. At the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign, he played in the Bundesliga for the 100th time - the vast majority of those appearances being with Mainz. His 24 saves so far this term put him level with Moritz Nicolas and Loris Karius at the top of the league standings.

Despite being a regular for Germany at youth level, opportunities in the senior ranks have been hard to come by. First called into Germany’s senior squad by Julian Nagelsmann in August 2025, Dahmen was selected by Jürgen Klopp for all four fixtures in the September-October 2026 Nations League window.

He remains uncapped ahead of the Greece match at Augsburg’s WWK Arena on 27 September, for which Klopp has named Alexander Nübel as his starting goalkeeper. There are shades of ter Stegen in Dahmen’s approach to the position, particularly his willingness to contribute to the build-up. Indeed, the Augsburg goalkeeper has identified playing with his feet as one of his key strengths

It is a comparison that fits his influences, too. Dahmen has named ter Stegen and Neuer as role models, studying their work with the ball, on the line and in one-on-one situations.

Dahmen has an English mother and is still eligible to represent the Three Lions. His international journey has so far been with Germany, but that family connection adds an intriguing twist to his story.

He also knows a thing or two about scoring goals as well as stopping them. Playing for Mainz’s reserves against Stuttgart’s second team in April 2018, Dahmen went forward for a late free-kick and scored a backheel equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw.
