West Ham announced the signing of winger Edvin Austbø from Viking FK on Monday morning for an undisclosed fee, with the Norwegian signing a four-year deal.
The 21-year-old scored eight goals and picked up five assists last season in all competitions, helping Viking win the Eliteserien title for the first time in 34 years. He was also named Eliteserien Young Player of the Year.
He has already featured 13 times this season for Viking, scoring three goals, including one in his final appearance for the club as they qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 1992/93, beating Dinamo Zagreb 5-3 on aggregate.
Austbø becomes the Hammers’ seventh signing of the summer, following Keiber Lamadrid, Joël Veltman, Manor Solomon, Arne Engels, Joël Piroe and Divin Mukasa.
Following the announcement, Austbø spoke to the club’s official website about his move to East London.
“It feels really good to be a Hammer,” said West Ham’s new No. 35. “Ever since I knew about the interest, I wanted to come here and have butterflies and am really looking forward to starting to play for this amazing Club.
“Obviously, the ambitions of the Club are big, and it’s also for me as a player. The talks I had with Nuno and Nils Koppen were amazing, and I just felt from the start that this was a good match and that I really wanted to come here.
“I watched English football on TV when I was a little kid. Everyone in Norway knows West Ham. It’s such a big Club and a Club that belongs on the highest level in England.”
West Ham’s Director of Player Recruitment Nils Koppen commented on the signing and how the club have been interested in the Norwegian for a while.
“Edvin is a player we have tracked closely for some time, and we are very happy to bring him to West Ham United.
“We believe he has the right attributes, strengths and potential to be successful in English football. He is a quick, energetic and intelligent player, who will bring another positive option to our attacking profile.”
