Australia launch their seventh World Cup campaign on Sunday morning with a challenging fixture against Turkiye at BC Place.
Head coach Tony Popovic has successfully improved the team’s defensive stability and physical intensity since taking charge. The Socceroos want to emulate their 2022 achievements by progressing from a balanced group containing the USA and Paraguay.
Popovic’s tactical blueprint relies heavily on rapid wide transitions and an aerial threat from set-pieces. However, containing a technically gifted Turkish midfield will test their defensive discipline to the absolute limit.
Popovic must manage an unexpected selection dilemma in the final third before Sunday’s kickoff. Norwich City striker Mohamed Touré missed a vital training session on Wednesday and remains a significant fitness doubt. In his absence, the manager will have to alter his attacking spearhead to find the necessary goalscoring efficiency.
Mathew Ryan will captain the team from goal, protected by a physically imposing backline featuring Harry Souttar and Alessandro Circati. Lucas Herrington is also expected to feature in defence to help absorb sustained opposition pressure.
Jackson Irvine will bring work rate and energy to the midfield battle alongside a structured central unit. Meanwhile, 35-year-old veteran Mathew Leckie will use his vast tournament experience to guide a younger generation of attacking talents on the big stage.
Australia predicted XI: Ryan; Italiano, Circati, Souttar, Herrington, Bos; Metcalfe, Irvine, O’Neill, Leckie; Toure
