Roberto Ayala, a former Valencia defender and now on Argentina’s coaching staff, has expressed regret after an altercation with Dani Olmo following the Argentina v Spain 2026 World Cup final on Sunday.
He had appeared to move between Leandro Paredes and Eric García before confronting Olmo and striking him in the neck area. “My intention was to go in, separate, and nothing more,” Ayala said, speaking to Capital Radio.
“It was a reaction to some words, but that is no excuse, my behaviour has to be different. If I see Dani Olmo I will apologise.”
“Obviously I am sorry, I cannot allow a feeling to change my mood, but for me things should stay on the pitch.” He added, “For me it was a push, not a punch.”
Ayala played 251 matches across seven seasons for Valencia and his image adorns a banner on the Mestalla facade.
“Spain were superior and deserve the title,” he said.
“I will go to València soon, maybe in September. Spain is a country I love and we should not take things to extremes.”
“As a supporter, I hope Valencia do well.”
