FC Bayern are looking for a backup for Harry Kane this summer, and Robert Lewandowski, an old acquaintance of the Munich club, has now been brought into the picture

FC Bayern are still looking for a suitable backup for Harry Kane this summer. The England international striker is a fixture in the Munich attack, but the record champions still lack a reliable alternative at the top level behind the 32-year-old

Now, of all people, an old acquaintance at Säbener Straße has been brought into play: Robert Lewandowski. The former Bayern striker is facing an uncertain future at FC Barcelona. His contract with the Catalans expires on 30 June and an extension is currently not on the cards

According to BILD veteran Walter M. Straten, Lewandowski could theoretically be an option for FC Bayern. The 37-year-old would be a high-quality backup for Kane and could add experience and goalscoring threat to Vincent Kompany’s squad

On paper, the idea sounds appealing. Lewandowski knows the club, the Bundesliga and the pressure at FC Bayern better than almost anyone else. What’s more, the Polish international striker is still in top form despite his advanced age

Will Lewandowski sit on the Bayern bench?

The crucial question, however, is whether Lewandowski would even be prepared to line up behind Kane in Munich. There are considerable doubts about this. At FC Barcelona, the attacker was not a supplementary player until recently, but an absolute regular

Even at the age of 37, Lewandowski is still one of those strikers who is defined by playing time and goals. A role as a mere backup is therefore unlikely to fit in with his sporting vision. Although it would be a luxury solution for FC Bayern, for Lewandowski himself it might be a step backwards

What’s more, Kane is unchallenged in Munich’s attack. As long as the Englishman is fit, he will be the main man under Vincent Kompany. It would therefore be difficult for Lewandowski to realistically compete for a place in the center of the attack

This is precisely why a return to the Isar currently seems rather unlikely. Although Bayern would hardly turn down a player of his class on reasonable terms, the sporting role would have to be clearly defined for all sides

MLS, Saudi Arabia and Italy beckon

A move to a club where Lewandowski is still planned as the number one striker seems much more likely at present. There is reportedly already interest from the US MLS and Saudi Arabia

Clubs in Italy are also said to be interested in the veteran. For Lewandowski, these options could be more attractive in sporting and financial terms than a comeback at FC Bayern with uncertain playing time

From Munich’s point of view, the search for a Kane backup remains exciting. The record champions need an attacker who can help immediately, but at the same time accept that there is no way around Kane

Lewandowski would undoubtedly solve this quality issue, but the question of his role remains the sticking point. As things stand, there is much to suggest that the former world footballer’s return to Bayern will remain more of a pipe dream.
