Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Chelsea made a “bad decision” by moving striker Nicolas Jackson on this summer.

Jackson completed a loan move to Bayern Munich on deadline day, which includes an obligation to buy based on making a certain number of appearances.

The 24-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea following the arrival of both Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

Paul Merson claims Chelsea made a mistake letting Nicolas Jackson go

Jackson spent two years at Stamford Bridge, and even signed a new two year contract extension last year keeping him at the club until 2033.

However, things can change very quickly in football, although the Blues could do with Jackson as Delap is not expected to return to training until November after suffering a hamstring injury at the end of August.

The Senegal international has made it clear he doesn’t want to play for Chelsea again, and Harry Kane praised Jackson for his performance earlier this week in the Champions League.

Joao Pedro is likely to lead the line against Liverpool on Saturday, or Enzo Maresca could opt to go with Tyrique George, but Merson feels Chelsea made a mistaking letting Jackson go.

“I told you Nicolas Jackson would be a huge miss,” he said as quoted on X.com.

“It was a bad decision to sell him, Chelsea have no player up front who can do what Jackson did for them.

“People will read this and be like, ‘what are you saying? He wasn’t even good.’ But it’s not about how many chances he missed, it’s about what he did for the team.

“I know Cole Palmer is injured, but Jackson made him a better player!”

Marc Guiu to finally get an opportunity

Chelsea didn’t sign a replacement for the Senegalese, but the club did recall Marc Guiu from his loan at newly promoted Sunderland.

Guiu has yet to kick a ball since returning to Chelsea, but Maresca has insisted he will get minutes and those could come against Liverpool.

Maresca has stated the youngster is working hard, and had a good week in training, and given he’s actually a number nine he’s surely a better option than Tyrique George.
