Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole found the back of the net as Tondela claimed a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara in the Liga Portugal on Saturday.
The 26-year-old midfield maestro doubled his team’s lead four minutes after Pedro Henryque opened the scoring in the hour mark.
As a result, the newly promoted Tondela moved out of the relegation zone and into 14th place with five points from seven league outings.
For Sithole, the goal will be a morale boost after a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to an injury sustained on national duty last year in September.
The Bafana international was stretchered off during South Africa’s clash against South Sudan in the AFCON qualifiers, which ruled him out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
He only managed to make two appearances for Gil Vicente, where he was on a season-long loan from then-second tier side Tondela.
‘Yaya’, as the player is affectionately known in his homeland, has played five matches in the ongoing campaign, starting three of those encounters.
Sithole has also been named in Hugo Broos’ latest preliminary squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
