Gareth Bale lived the highest highs of his career at Real Madrid, winning five Champions League titles and delivering unforgettable moments in finals, but he also experienced the brutal weight of expectation that comes with the shirt.

Recently, the Welshman spoke to The Athletic (h/t AS) about Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti’s man-management, the difference between Madrid and MLS, and how he now views football after retirement.

On Mourinho, Bale said:

“Having had an experienced coach like Carlo Ancelotti, I hope Jose can stabilise the group and get everyone moving in the same direction.

“He just pushes you to get the best out of you, he will try to understand each player and find whatever is needed to make them work.

“Sometimes it can be putting pressure on someone through the media, sometimes it can simply be giving them a hug. He has been at Madrid, he understands the dynamic and knows how things work. He will come up with a plan to make it work.”

Having played under him, Bale is not pretending Mourinho will be gentle, but he clearly believes the Portuguese coach understands the unique ecosystem of Real Madrid.

Praise for Ancelotti

Bale also praised Ancelotti, saying:

“Carlo was a great people manager. He understands the psychology and the pressures that come with it. But he creates a relationship with you where you feel he really cares about you.”

“Sometimes players do not play, but he knows how to keep them motivated and on his side. At a big club like Madrid, you do not need to be a coach in the strict sense. You have to manage egos, that is why he has had so much success at the biggest clubs.”

That line should resonate with Real Madrid supporters. At the Bernabeu, tactics matter, but personality management can decide entire seasons.

That is precisely why the club have a history of doing well with coaches who are great man-managers rather than intense tacticians.

The pressure at Real Madrid

Bale’s clearest comment came when comparing Madrid with life in the United States. He said:

“Here there is no relegation, there are no consequences for losing. At Real Madrid, if you lose a game, it is like the end of the world.

“I remember the first game we lost at LAFC. I expected a wave of pressure, maybe insults and articles. But losing is something that is accepted…,” he explained.

“Because maybe it does not have such serious consequences, but also because it is a different environment. They recover quickly and start again. I enjoyed it. It is a more family-like environment.”

A reminder of Madrid’s standard

That is the difference Real Madrid live with every week. Defeat is not treated as part of the process. It is treated as a crisis, and that is exactly why the club keep winning.

Bale also reflected on modern football, saying:

“Especially in the last five years, the coach has become a little more dominant and the approach is more tactical. Football is no longer an end-to-end game. It is more a game of chess than a basketball match, which is not as exciting…”

“You do not see as much dribbling and players do not do it. Maybe it is because coaches tell them not to, but there are still some players who can get you out of your seat, like Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Vinicius Jr.

“But maybe there are not as many because they are not allowed to be.”

Bale is absolutely spot on about the direction in which modern football is moving. It is mostly focused on severe tactical structuring and less individual freedom.

His comments also offer a useful reminder as Mourinho begins his new cycle. Real Madrid need structure, yes, but they must never lose the fearlessness that defines the club.

Bale walked that line in the Spanish capital better than almost anyone else for nearly a decade, and it is refreshing to hear all this from the horse’s mouth.
