Flamengo president Bap has taken responsibility for dismissing head coach Filipe Luís after the rout of Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca. The decision was delivered on Monday night at the Maracanã.
According to Globo.com, an audio message of a little over a minute, sent by Bap to a senior benefactor and shared among club councillors, set out his reasoning. He said his duty was to the institution and that, if the project looked off course, he had to act.
At the president’s request, director José Boto informed Filipe of his dismissal shortly after the post-match press conference.
Tensions first surfaced during protracted renewal talks that lasted months, with agreement only reached on 29 December. At one stage both sides feared a breakdown before eventually finding common ground.
Filipe felt exposed by leaks from the process, while the board wanted greater financial concessions. The new deal lasted just over two months, and the parties still need to negotiate the termination clause.
That stuttering dynamic led Bap to sound out alternatives in December, including Leonardo Jardim. He was already negotiating a replacement when talks improved and Filipe signed until 2027. The Jardim plan resurfaced in recent days and advanced before Flamengo had even decided the semi-final against Madureira.
