Even though he is only 18 years old, Barcelona defensive prodigy Pau Cubarsi has displayed maturity beyond his age in his short career at the highest level.

Having made his first-team breakthrough under Xavi Hernandez back in January 2024, the young La Masia sensation has not looked back.

Now, a permanent fixture in the starting lineup under Hansi Flick, Cubarsi was integral to the Catalans’ domestic treble success in the last season.

Cubarsi – the mentor

Now, according to SPORT, Pau Cubarsi is already serving as a steadying figure and a mentor for the young La Masia players joining the senior squad for pre-season and hoping to earn a place on the upcoming pre-season tour.

Youngsters like Jofre Torrents, Dro, Juan Hernandez, and Landry Farre are under considerable pressure. They know these days are crucial and that they must show their best to impress Hansi Flick and secure a spot on the tour.

Having someone like Cubarsi by their side, someone who knows La Masia inside out and who has already made the jump to training with superstars, can make a major difference.

After all, the teenage defender, a full international player for Spain, has quickly developed a strong presence and leadership role within the squad. He has handled the whirlwind of his rapid rise with composure and surprising maturity.

During the training sessions, Cubarsi has been noticeably attentive to his younger teammates. The defender helps wherever he can and is actively engaged in supporting those experiencing their first taste of the senior team environment – something that can feel overwhelming.

For Flick, the presence of homegrown players like Cubarsi in the squad is a major asset. They not only set an example but also provide the emotional and tactical support that newcomers need to feel comfortable and integrated.

Cubarsi’s status is far from typical for an 18-year-old in any elite European club. But his case, like that of Lamine Yamal, is completely exceptional.
